a male-dominated industry. Panelists included Darci Arnold, vice president
of global marketing at Seagate; Tiffani Bova, director of sales and channel
programs at Affinity; Sharon Habibi, founder, president and CEO of
Syscom Technologies; Gia McNutt, president and CEO of Special Order Systems;
Rauline Ochs, vice president of BEA's worldwide partner initiatives; and Valarie
Remmers, vice president of information technology at PFSweb.
The panelists discussed the lack of women in executive positions in the industry
as well as the business world. In 1999, only 12.5 percent of senior executives
at Fortune 500 companies were women, according to a Catalyst study, while
only 11.7 percent of Fortune 500 directors were women. Members of the panel
said there were many obstacles to building a lengthy career in IT or any industry,
citing such examples as sexual harassment and finding time to raise a family.

"It takes a very tough skin to be a female trying to move up the ladder,"
Bova says. "It takes a lot of self-discipline and self-confidence to
be able to overcome those hurdles." If recent numbers from the company
are any indication, Affinity is certainly squeezing the supposedly saturated
shared market for all its worth. The company's last quarterly report boasted
18% revenue growth and 8,000 new customers - not a small feat, considering
markets have done little to help most Web hosting companies. "Both quarters
(this year) have exceeded our expectations overall," Zdanowski says.
And because the hosting market is filled with companies gearing their services
to SMEs, competing with other hosts isn't easy. "SME is a tough market,"
Zdanowski says. "You have to operate efficiently, you have to know the
customer... you've got to communicate well." The panelists addressed
the role of education, particularly lamenting the lack of female students
in computer science classes and programs. "At the lowest levels of the
elementary, middle school and high school education, girls aren't encouraged
[to explore an IT career]," says Habibi, who has a daughter studying
information technology in college. "They're just not counseled by their
parents. Offers asp web hosting provider, internet host, and coldfusion webhosting plans.
